Cultivating Sustainability

For the Greening Our Horizons team, sustainability is measured not only by what is achieved today, but by the systems, partnerships and habits that will continue serving communities for generations.

That long-term vision shaped Soroptimist International Nairobi Central’s World Environment Day 2026 action at the Nairobi Children’s Rescue Centre in Kabete. Women, girls and children came together to plant fruit trees, share practical environmental knowledge and demonstrate how reuse can support both people and the planet.

Young Soroptimists join the Greening Our Horizons campaign, turning climate action into lasting impact one fruit tree at a time.

Fifty Fruit Trees for the Future

The Greening Our Horizons team planted 50 fruit-bearing trees, including orange, avocado, papaya, passion fruit and mango. As the trees mature, they are expected to contribute nutritious food, cleaner air, shade, biodiversity and a healthier environment at the centre.

Children at the centre participated directly in the planting process. By learning how to prepare the soil, position seedlings and care for young trees, they were encouraged to see themselves as lifelong stewards of their environment.

Sustainability Beyond the Soil

The visit also included a donation of gently used clothing and toys. Giving useful items a second life reduces waste and the demand for resources and energy required to manufacture new goods. At the same time, the donations brought comfort, dignity and joy to children at the centre.

Together, the tree planting and donation drive expressed a broader understanding of sustainability: restoring nature, reducing waste and strengthening communities are interconnected actions.

The Greening Sisterhood Movement

Building on Greening Our Horizons, SI Nairobi Central is introducing the Greening Sisterhood Movement as a way to expand collective environmental action across the Soroptimist network.

The movement will focus on three priorities:

  • Standardising impact: creating a shared blueprint that clubs can adapt for sustainable projects aligned with continental goals.
  • Sharing resources: exchanging practical lessons and successful models across borders.
  • Deepening collaboration: connecting individual club initiatives into a unified pan-African movement.

The aim is to move environmental advocacy from isolated action to shared responsibility. When one club plants a seed of hope, the wider sisterhood can help it grow.

An Invitation to Act Together

The future of the planet will be shaped by ordinary people choosing to take meaningful action together. The Greening Sisterhood Movement invites every woman and girl to become a catalyst for environmental change by planting trees, restoring ecosystems, embracing reuse and inspiring others.

Small actions, repeated across many hands, can transform landscapes, strengthen communities and secure a greener future. SI Nairobi Central invites Soroptimists across Africa to stand together, grow together and help cultivate a lasting legacy of environmental leadership.
